Biography

Bill Phillips has worked with medical education and primary care research in the Department of Family Medicine since 1979. He is a native of Seattle, graduated from UW School of Medicine and earned an MPH at the UW School of Public Health. He was residency-trained and board-certified in family medicine at Providence Medical Center and in preventive medicine at the UW School of Public Health. He completed USPHS fellowship training in epidemiology, community medicine and primary care policy.

For 20 years, Dr. Phillips practiced full-time, full-spectrum family medicine in Seattle.
His experience is broad, his interests varied and his work interdisciplinary.

Dr. Phillips was the Theodore J. Phillips Endowed Professor in Family Medicine at UWSOM and Clinical Professor of Health Services and of Epidemiology at UWSPH. He directed the Family Medicine Community Clinical Clerkship in the early days of WAMI and later directed the
UW NRSA Fellowship in Primary Care Research. He pioneered the first interprofessional elective course in primary care.

Dr. Phillips has served in scientific and professional leadership roles at the national and
international levels, including:
• President, King County Academy of Family Physicians
• United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF).
• President of North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG).
• Chair of the AAFP Commission on Science.
• Senior advisory panels ACIP, NIH, AHRQ, HRSA, NLM, CMMS, STFM, BCBSA.
• He is a founder and retired editor of the Annals of Family Medicine.

His honors include:
• Maurice Wood Award for Lifetime Contributions to Primary Care Research (NAPCRG)
• Outstanding Research Mentor Award (NAPCRG)

• Cheplove Medal (New York Academy of Family Physicians)
• Fulbright Senior Scholar - Ireland
